Description

OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE

Rather than simply concentrating on any one period, such as the golden years of Peter Gregg and Hurley Haywood's victories of the 1970s, BRUMOS: An American Racing Icon traces the very earliest beginnings of the brand when the Brundage (of BRUndage MOtorS) made their way south to help develop south Florida with their friend Glenn Hammond Curtiss, the aviation pioneer. With hundreds of never-before-seen letters and documents, the book details every step that brought them into the world of sports-car racing in the early 1950s and helped to establish both the VW and Porsche brands in the United States.

The same attention to detail is followed throughout the several Brumos periods including those of Johnny von Neumann, Peter Gregg, Jim Busby, Deborah Gregg, and Dano Davis. Other automotive luminaries mentioned throughout are beach-racer Sig Haugdahl, Andy Granatelli, Max Hoffman, Huschke von Hanstein, Roger Penske, Bob Holbert, Bob Snodgrass, Paul Newman, Hans Stuck, A.J. Foyt and hundreds of others from the racing world.

The Collector's Edition book-set is four volumes, 1600 pages, and with over 2900 images, many never before seen except in private collections. As a dedication, it also includes the hand-written signatures of Brumos principals, Jan Brundage, Jack Atkinson, Roger Penske, Jennifer Johnson, Deborah Gregg, Dano Davis, Jim Busby, Susan Snodgrass, Richard Baron, Kerry Morse, and author Sean Cridland.

Frank Stella

New York City-based artist Frank Stella first became known as a leader in the minimalist art movement in the late 1950s. Since then, he has broken away from the flat-picture plane to create art that is bursting from not only the frame but the wall and into monumental three-dimensional space, a process that now employs computer technology and can include paint, metal, and carbon fiber, among other materials.

More than just a participating artist, Stella's connection to the Brumos family runs long and deep. He was a personal friend of Brumos principal Peter Gregg, who he met when he designed the 1976 BMW Le Mans car driven by Gregg and Brian Redman. Now he continues a decades-long friendship with Hurley Haywood.

For #001 of the Brumos Ultimate Artist's' Edition, Frank Stella chose to show his deep connection to the Brumos family by creating a slipcover design for this book. Its geometric shapes, which visually explode off the surface, give an entirely new abstract expression to the Brumos logo. The slipcover was signed and dated by Mr. Stella and will be an invaluable centerpiece for any collector of Brumos Memorabilia and/or fine art.

Please note a memorabilia buyer's premium of 20% is applicable on this lot and that Broad Arrow Group is unable to provide the winning bidder with tax assistance in applying for any charitable tax deductions.
