The 851 firmly launched Ducati into the modern era in more than one way. It was the first Ducati to feature the new “Desmoquattro” water-cooled 4-valve twin-cylinder engine and simultaneously returned the marque to top-level racing. A World Superbike championship followed in 1990, and the 851 F90 captured sixteen podiums in twenty-six races during its years on track—a highly enviable record of success!
Most of the 20 Ducati 851 F90 Corsas produced in 1990 were raced hard, but occasionally there are those rare examples that go unraced and are sequestered for other purposes. This F90 Corsa, frame number 798, is one such example. It was first acquired by Italian Oscar Rumi, owner and team manager of the 1988 and 1989 World Superbike Champions, Team Rumi. It may seem odd that the owner of a team that fielded championship-winning Honda RC30s would be allowed to acquire competitor's machinery, but rather than experience the bike for himself it is said that Rumi wanted to examine both the frame geometry and set-up. As a result, the bike was not used during his ownership.
It is believed that Rumi retained the Corsa for two decades before likely brokering it through Gianni Peroni to John Surtees. Of course, “Big John” — the ultra-competitive former two-time Grand Prix motorcycle and Formula One World Champion, as well as team owner—needs no introduction, yet it is noted that he had a soft spot for Ducati 851 racing machinery. The bike remained with Surtees, with fluids drained and turned over per its Ducati workshop log until his passing in 2017 at the age of 83. Acquired directly from the Surtees family in 2018, it was the star of the 2020 Salon Privé Concours at Blenheim Palace, fawned over for its pedigree and highly original condition. Apart from Salon Privé, it has been maintained as a life-sized Objet d'art under current ownership and likely remains the most original “as delivered” example extant and certainly the finest on offer today.

La Ducati 851 ha segnato il lancio definitivo del marchio nell'era moderna sotto molti aspetti. È stata la prima Ducati a montare il nuovo motore bicilindrico “Desmoquattro” a 4 valvole, raffreddato a liquido, e allo stesso tempo ha riportato la casa di Borgo Panigale ai vertici delle competizioni internazionali. La vittoria nel Campionato Mondiale Superbike 1990 e la conquista di sedici podi in ventisei gare durante la stagione fanno sì che la 851 F90 abbia un invidiabile record di successi!
La maggior parte delle 20 Ducati 851 F90 Corsa prodotte nel 1990 sono state utilizzate intensamente nelle competizioni, ma esistono anche alcuni rari esemplari che non hanno mai corso e sono stati riservati per altri scopi. Questa F90 Corsa, numero di telaio 798, è proprio uno di questi esemplari. Fu acquistata per la prima volta dall'italiano Oscar Rumi, proprietario e team manager del Team Rumi, che nel 1988 e 1989 vinse il Campionato Mondiale Superbike con le Honda RC30. Potrebbe sembrare strano che il proprietario di una squadra che schierava moto da competizione Honda, vincitrici del titolo, abbia comprato una moto della concorrenza, ma si dice che Rumi fosse più interessato a studiare la geometria del telaio e l'assetto piuttosto che usarla per correre. Per questo motivo, durante la sua proprietà la moto non venne mai utilizzata.
Si ritiene che Rumi abbia conservato la moto per vent’anni prima di cederla, probabilmente tramite Gianni Peroni, a John Surtees. Naturalmente, “Big John” — ex pilota ultra-competitivo, campione del mondo di motociclismo e Formula 1, nonché ex proprietario di un team di monoposto— non ha bisogno di presentazioni, ma è noto che avesse un debole per la Ducati 851. La moto rimase con Surtees fino alla sua morte nel 2017 all’età di 83 anni, mantenuta con i liquidi drenati e accesa secondo le indicazioni di Ducati. Acquisita direttamente dalla famiglia Surtees nel 2018, fu la protagonista nel 2020 del Salon Privé Concours a Blenheim Palace, dove venne ammirata per la sua provenienza e per le sue condizioni straordinariamente originali. Oltre alla partecipazione al Salon Privé, la moto è stata conservata come un vero e proprio oggetto d’arte, e probabilmente rimane l’esemplare più originale esistente e certamente il migliore attualmente disponibile sul mercato.
