The BMW M3 CSL, standing for Coupe Sport Leichtbau (Coupe Sport Lightweight), is the ultimate road-legal performance version of the E46 M3. Debuting in 2000 at the Geneva Motor Show, the concept sparked excitement amongst enthusiasts, leading to a limited production of just 1,383 units between June and December 2003.

To achieve an outstanding power-to-weight ratio of 3.85 kilograms per horsepower, the CSL shed 110 kilograms compared to the standard M3, using carbon fiber, glass-reinforced plastic, and other lightweight materials. Key features included a thin-walled exhaust, composite rear diffuser, aluminum hood, and the first M model with a carbon fiber roof. Comfort features like power seats, air conditioning, and the radio were removed to reduce weight.

Power was boosted by 17 horsepower, bringing the total to 360, thanks to a tuned 3.2-liter "S54" inline-six engine with a carbon fiber intake and air filter housing. The CSL's striking design included a large front air intake, composite trunk lid with a curved spoiler, front splitter, and rear diffuser, all enhancing both its look and aerodynamics.

This CLS was delivered new in Germany in striking Silver Grey Metallic over an Amaretta and Reflex interior. The original owner elected to add a few creature comforts to this car, including the BMW Business radio and air conditioning with automatic climate control. The car was then imported to the United Kingdom, where it has seen limited use, displaying just under 46,000 kilometers at the time of cataloging. Over 20 years since its introduction, the M3 CSL still maintains its status as one of the most coveted M models ever produced, with splendid examples like this being among the most coveted in its limited production run.

La BMW M3 CSL, acronimo di Coupé Sport Leichtbau (Coupé Sportiva Alleggerita), rappresenta la massima espressione della produzione stradale della M3 E46. Presentata come concept nel 2000 al Salone di Ginevra, suscitò immediatamente grande entusiasmo tra gli appassionati, dando vita a una produzione limitata di soli 1.383 esemplari, realizzati tra giugno e dicembre 2003.

Per raggiungere un eccezionale rapporto peso/potenza di 3,85 kg per cavallo, la CSL fu alleggerita di 110 kg rispetto alla M3 standard, grazie all’impiego di fibra di carbonio, plastica rinforzata con vetroresina e altri materiali leggeri. Tra gli elementi distintivi figuravano lo scarico alleggerito, il diffusore posteriore in materiale composito, il cofano in alluminio e - per la prima volta su una M - il tetto in fibra di carbonio. Per contenere ulteriormente il peso, furono eliminati comfort come i sedili elettrici, l’aria condizionata e la radio.

La potenza venne incrementata di 17 CV, raggiungendo così 360 CV, grazie al motore sei cilindri in linea da 3,2 litri “S54”, dotato di una cassa filtro aria in fibra di carbonio. Esteticamente, la CSL si distingueva per una grande presa d’aria anteriore, cofano posteriore in materiale composito con spoiler integrato, splitter anteriore e diffusore posteriore, tutti elementi che miglioravano sia l’estetica che l’aerodinamica.

Questo esemplare venne consegnato nuovo in Germania, nell’elegante colorazione Silver Grey Metallic con interni in Amaretta e Reflex. Il primo proprietario scelse di dotarlo di alcuni optional per migliorare il comfort, tra cui la radio BMW Business e l’aria condizionata a controllo automatico. Successivamente l’auto venne importata nel Regno Unito, dove è stata utilizzata con grande parsimonia, accumulando poco meno di 46.000 chilometri al momento dell’inserimento a catalogo. A oltre vent’anni dal suo debutto, la M3 CSL continua a essere una delle BMW M più desiderate e ricercate di sempre, con esemplari straordinari come questo che rappresentano il vertice assoluto di un’iconica serie prodotta in tiratura limitata.
