Engine No. 60274785

Production of the first BMW M3 began in March 1986 to meet the FIA Group A homologation requirement of 5,000 standard production cars for the 1987 World Touring Car Championship. Its development faced delays due to internal debates, particularly about using a turbocharger. While some argued for forced induction due to the small four-cylinder engine's displacement, BMW chose to stay true to its Motorsport DNA by opting for natural aspiration.

The M3 was powered by the S14B23 engine, a 2.3-liter inline four derived from the BMW M1 that initially produced up to 200 horsepower at 6,750 rpm. In comparison, the racing version could reach 10,000 rpm and produce an astonishing 300 horsepower. The street and race car versions were paired with a five-speed manual transmission, featuring a dog-leg first gear and a shortened shift travel.

Due to overwhelming demand, BMW continued production through the 1991 model year, as the M3 was designed to be a car that could effortlessly transition between engaging country roads and the demands of the race track. This versatile characteristic remains a hallmark of all BMW Motorsport cars today. As a result, the cars were continually improved to meet FIA requirements to keep the race versions competitive. In 1988, the M3 received numerous upgrades, including a new front suspension, modified anti-roll bars, a reinforced braking system, and a Kevlar intake manifold with ventilated disc brakes with ABS ensured effective deceleration.

Today, well-presented examples, such as this 1989 BMW M3 finished in Alpine White II, continue to command interest from enthusiasts and collectors alike for its Motorsport pedigree. Complete with a sporting Black leather interior and Recaro-designed seats from new, this car has covered just 141,000 kilometers and remains an attractive offering today.
