The open two-seater version of Lancia's groundbreaking Aurelia, influenced heavily by flourishing American sports car market of the 1950s, emerged in 1954 as the Spider America. One of Pinin Farina's finest post-war masterpieces, its soft, flowing proportions were adorned with delicate split front and rear bumperettes, a hood scoop, and a low wraparound windscreen—clearly drawing inspiration from Pinin Farina's open Ferraris of the period.

The 1956 introduction of the B24 Convertible maintained the fundamental beauty of the original design while introducing substantial refinements. Following the evolution of its fifth series B20 coupe sibling, the Convertible incorporated several comfort-oriented modifications: taller doors with proper roll-up windows, a more conventionally angled windshield featuring vent windows, external door handles, and a more sophisticated dashboard complete with glovebox door. Additionally, the Convertible gained a proper convertible top for weather protection. While produced in greater numbers than its Spider sister car—521 in total between 1956 and 1958—the Convertible is generally favored by Lancia enthusiasts who actively drive their vehicles as the all-round more practical choice, particularly in inclement weather.

This fine B24 S Convertible—with 'S' denoting Sinistra for left-hand-drive—hails from the final year of production and thus represents the most fully-evolved open variant of the Aurelia. According to its Lancia Certificato d'Origine, the car was originally completed on 7 August 1958 in Grigio over Pelle Rossa interior. Its documented history resumes with its 1986 acquisition in California by the consignor's late husband, with both the original black California plate and title remaining with the car. Between 1987 and 1996, the Lancia underwent a comprehensive restoration that included refinishing it in its current red exterior with black leather interior configuration, with approximately 100,000 DM invested in total. While the original engine was initially restored during this period, its eventual seizure led to the owners sourcing and installing a correct overhauled replacement alloy V6 engine.

The restoration has aged gracefully over the decades, with invoices on file documenting maintenance and restoration work dating back to 1986. Most recently, the Lancia was treated to a major service in March of 2024 and passed its last German TÜV inspection as recently as September 2023. It is now offered with an extensive history file that includes a FIVA identity card as well as a German DEUVET document. While both documents are no longer current, their prior issuance suggests that renewing certification for future historic motoring events would likely be straightforward. This refined open-air Lancia stands ready to delight its next custodian whether at concours events or on spirited long-distance tours.
