The Academy of Art University Collection

  • Rare and collectible, with a short two-year production run
  • Limited ornamentation offers an air of understated elegance
  • Originally equipped with air conditioning, the only option available

Chassis No. C56D2626

As is well known, the Continental Mark II debuted as a bold statement of luxury and style, crafted to rival the finest cars in the world. Produced under Ford Motor Company's exclusive Continental division, the Mark II embodied elegance with its timeless design, complete with its signature simulated rear spare. At $10,000, it was the most expensive American car of its time, simultaneously ensuring exclusivity and a bevy of custom features.

Every detail of the Mark II reflected masterful craftsmanship. The finest leathers were sourced from Bridge-of-Weir, Scotland, where hides were hand-combed, kneaded, and “antiqued” to achieve remarkable softness and strength. Only one in every hundred hides met the Mark II's exacting standards. With its 126-inch wheelbase and nearly 5,200-pound frame, the Mark II offered a driving experience as refined as its design, blending aristocratic modernity with understated luxury.

According the to the Continental Mark II Database, chassis number 2626 was originally finished in “01” Black over a “1F6M” interior specified with Deep Red leather seat biscuits & White leather seat bolsters and Deep Red welting all part of the Continental's “All Leather Trim Schemes.” A badge affixed to the interior of the engine compartment indicated that the car was likely shown at the Second Annual San Fernando Valley Concours d'Elegance at McHenry's Tail o' the Cock restaurant. While it may seem unusual that a year-old automobile would be invited to a concours event, the Continental Mark II would fit the bill as a distinctive yet uncomplicated and, yes, elegant automobile. Furthermore, it proudly wears a Lincoln Continental Owners Club grille badge, both sure signs that this Mark II has been held in high esteem by its owners.

Acquired by the Academy of Art University Collection in 2004, chassis number C56D2626 features an older restoration in shade of Platinum complemented by a set of wide whitewall tires, red painted wheels, and bright finished turbine hubcaps. The interior presents in its original “as built” colors of White and Deep Red. A visual inspection of the tidy engine compartment reveals the car would benefit from further attention. Despite its short production run and high costs, the Continental Mark II remains a high-water mark of mid-century opulence and today an impressive value for what was created as the ultimate American luxury car.
