In the late 1920s, Auburn served as the cornerstone of E.L. Cord's growing automotive empire, providing steady sales and profits while he expanded into more ambitious ventures like the front-wheel-drive Cord L-29 and the legendary Duesenberg Model J. In 1929, the company's "Big Eight” 120 model featured a 120-horsepower, 268 cu-in L-head inline eight-cylinder engine, mounted in a 125-inch wheelbase chassis that provided a solid foundation for Auburn's success.

The stunning Auburn Speedster, designed by the talented Alan Leamy, transformed the Eight platform into America's first true sports car. With its dramatically tapered rear end, rakish doors, and wind-swept styling adapted from a McFarlan-bodied Duesenberg show car, the Speedster delivered exceptional performance with a top speed of 100 miles per hour. This exclusive model enjoyed record sales and proved competitive in racing on both sides of the Atlantic, establishing Auburn's performance-oriented image and making its contemporaries appear decidedly outdated.

This 1929 Auburn 120 “Big Eight” was likely re-bodied at some point in its past, featuring custom Speedster coachwork that pays homage to the original design. The striking two-tone paint scheme features dark red beltline complemented by a red center and upper body with a subtle red pinstripe. The restoration has aged gracefully and exhibits an impressive attention to detail. Wire wheels feature two-ear chrome knock offs paired with whitewall tires, and twin side-mounted spares are accented by Auburn-branded mirrors. The classic Auburn raked split-V windshield defines its profile, while two Trippe Speedlight driving lights and large Monogram headlights make up its distinctive front end. The interior showcases full red leather upholstery, while a prominent chrome spotlight mounts to the running board, bracketed to the front cowl.

The engine compartment houses the desirable 120-horsepower inline eight-cylinder engine which presents cleanly with well-maintained brightwork. The car includes its top and top bow stored in the rear compartment. Having been restored to a high standard, the car has been nicely maintained since entering the Academy of Art University Collection in 2005 and would make an excellent companion for Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club and CCCA events.
