Is it a car? Is it a boat? It's both! Hans Trippel's work on amphibious vehicles began in the 1930s and led to the creation of the Volkswagen-based Schwimmwagen. After the war, Trippel revived the concept with the Amphicar, initially called the Eurocar. The Amphicar featured a 1,147 cc four-cylinder engine from the Triumph Herald and a special transmission that powered two propellers for water travel. On land, it could reach speeds of up to 70 miles per hour; on water, it cruised at 6 knots (7 mph). Despite a well-publicized 1962 English Channel crossing, the Amphicar's sales success was hindered by difficulties meeting U.S. safety and emissions regulations. Manufactured by the Quandt Group in West Germany, the Amphicar had a total production of a mere 3,878 units compared to the projected 25,000.

A sensation on land and water, this 1964 Amphicar is finished in Lagoon Blue with a matching Lagoon Blue and White vinyl interior. Believed to have been completely restored under prior California-based ownership in the mid-2000s, this car has only covered just under 3,900 miles since. Features include body-colored wheels with period-correct whitewall tires and chrome hubcaps, Motometer gauges, and a white vinyl soft top that stows neatly under the boot cover. There are two vintage life vests for added flair, a U.S.-style ensign with mast light, and, should the need arise, even an Amphicar-branded oar. While the sports car that swims is typically seen more on the road than in the water, this 1964 Amphicar Model 770 aims to impress those naturally curious onlookers on both land and sea!
