Description

Chassis No. YT9NN1U15KA007203

Established in the town of Olofström, Southern Sweden in 1994, Koenigsegg have since acquired an enviable reputation as arguably the world's foremost builder of ultra-high specification, ultra-low volume supercars. Characterised by dramatic looks, extreme levels of performance, and the use of ground-breaking technology, Koenigsegg have dominated the bespoke sector of the supercar market for almost 30 years, and in so doing challenged - and surpassed - existing performance benchmarks set by the likes of Ferrari, Porsche, and McLaren.

Work on their initial Audi-engined CC prototype commenced in the company's first year; the car exhibited such novel design features as a carbon fiber monocoque chassis with integrated subframes, and a detachable, stowable roof panel. Vertically opening dihedral doors and featured on the CC prototype, and has become with which Koenigsegg has become synonymous over the next three decades.. The CC program continued until 2009, incorporating seven further but subtly differing variants, by which time total production amounted to just 69 cars, underlining the bespoke nature of Koenigsegg's production process.

In 2011, the company embarked upon its second-generation supercar, the Agera. The new model featured a modified carbon fiber monocoque incorporating an additional aluminum honeycomb structure, as well as advanced active aerodynamics. The Koenigsegg-developed twin-turbo V8 engine of the CCR was retained, now enlarged to 5.0 liters and available in several different specifications, ranging from 947 horsepower to a scarcely believable 1,341 horsepower in “RS” configuration. Perhaps unsurprisingly, an Agera RS became the fastest production car in the world with a two-way average of 277.87 mph on a section of closed public highway in Nevada.

Buoyed by the success of the Agera, and conscious of the need to constantly evaluate new technologies and embrace changing attitudes to the automobile, in 2016 Koenigsegg embarked upon their most technically ambitious project to date…the Regera. Although imbued with the same spirit as its forebears, the Regera embraces hybrid technology and features levels of comfort and refinement previously unheard of for the marque. The new model employs the same central monocoque structure and internal combustion engine design as its predecessor, as well as such familiar Koenigsegg trademarks as a removable carbon fiber roof and dihedral doors. However, a significant departure from previous practice is its means of power generation; the car's 1,100 horsepower internal combustion engine is now supplemented by an additional 700 electrically-generated horsepower sourced from three onboard KERS-regenerated electric motors.

Central to the car's operation is its ingenious Koenigsegg Direct Drive (KDD) system, which dispenses with a conventional multi-speed transmission, thereby saving weight and all but eliminating transmission friction losses. Instead, a 2.73:1 final drive ratio is employed, working in conjunction with a highly advanced “Hydracoup”, or hydraulic coupling. This, in turn, is connected to the car's electric motors, which provide the majority of energy from a standstill. As the speed increases, the Hydracoup disengages, feeding more power from the conventional engine to the rear wheels, and less electrical energy from the 800-volt battery pack. A maximum combined output of 1,500 horsepower is available; the car's power delivery is therefore seamless, which is instrumental in achieving its remarkable 0-400-0 km/h time of just 31.49 seconds.

Predictably, technology abounds elsewhere on the car, with a three-position Traction Control system, rear-wheel steering, active suspension, active engine mounts, active aerodynamics, and ABS-compatible ceramic disc brakes all deployed in the interest of harnessing the car's formidable performance capability. In line with the Regera's original brief, the cabin area boasts enviable levels of refinement; its sumptuous leather interior features a reversing camera, tire monitoring system, and climate control, while full Apple Play functionality and a state-of-the-art infotainment system is also offered as standard. Finally, a hydraulic suspension lift system ensures the accommodation of all manner of road obstacles, while a hydraulically-operated “Autoskin” system permits remote opening of all major body panels at the touch of a button.

One of just 80 Regeras constructed, this magnificent example was first delivered to Lake Forest Sportscars of Lake Bluff, Illinois. Opulently finished in the color scheme of red tinted carbon fiber – a $235,000 additional option – with Lingonberry Red interior, the car's dramatic appearance is further enhanced by selected panels and components being finished in unpainted, natural carbon fiber, including the detachable roof, rear wing, and door mirrors. Furthermore, the car is configured with the $145,000 Ghost Package, a high-downforce kit reducing lift by 20-percent with the addition of a new lip spoiler at the front of the car as well as a pair of winglets at the rear. Additional options include Koenigsegg's proprietary Aircore centerlock carbon fiber wheels and body-color brake calipers. After its initial ownership, the car subsequently passed to the second owner in August 2021 and, at the time of cataloging, has covered just 2,496 miles from new. This Regera also features an extended factory warranty until 9 April 2024 and, for additional protection, a full XPEL film covers the exterior carbon fiber surfaces.

If Bugatti are justifiably held up as the pinnacle of pre-war road car design and engineering, then surely a case can be made putting forward Koenigsegg as their natural 21st century successors. Intricately designed, exquisitely engineered, and exhaustively tested, their cars remain among the most exacting and highly prized of all contemporary supercars. Furthermore, with the company's total cumulative production over almost three decades amounting to barely a fortnight's output from Maranello, the supply of cars remains extremely low.

The Regera arguably represents the most accomplished Koenigsegg yet constructed; a technical tour de force guaranteed to amaze, inspire, and delight in equal measure. In the case of the magnificent example presented here, these qualities are further enhanced by its minimal mileage, comprehensive specification, warranty, and two-owner status.

Addendum:

Please note that this car is non-California smog compliant and offered for sale to dealers and out of state buyers only
