Chassis No. 83217
Engine No. 65063
The Porsche 356 Speedster's commercial success is often credited to the influential importer Max Hoffman, yet the original idea for a stripped-down, track-ready 356 came from Hoffman's West Coast counterpart, John von Neumann, whose chopped-down Gmund coupe served as the earliest inspiration for the Speedster. Instantly recognizable by its low, wraparound windscreen and simplified cockpit, the Speedster was equally Porsche's least costly and most sporting model intended to compete with less-expensive offerings from Britain.
With the improved 356 A debuting for the 1956 model year, the Speedster gained the new 1.6-liter, 60-horsepower engine. An instant success in the burgeoning American sports car racing scene, the Speedster's style, performance and value made it irresistible to sports car fans.
One American who fell for the Speedster was First Lieutenant Richard W. Savage, who was stationed in Germany following his service in World War II. According to the accompanying Porsche-issued Kardex, he purchased this Speedster in the spring of 1957, taking delivery through Autohaus Kahrmann in Fulda, Germany. The Kardex shows the original specification as White (code 603) over Red leatherette upholstery and equipped with U.S.-specification sealed beam headlamps and a 1600 engine.
Even though it was first owned by an American, the Speedster likely never left Europe and has been registered in Italy since 1987. The subject of an older restoration, it is presented here in its original shade of White and retaining its original numbers-matching engine. Details include bumper overriders, Reutter Karrosserie badges, and chrome wheels shod with Michelin tires and chrome hubcaps, and the original, partial chassis number stamp is visible in the front hood hinge. It should be noted that the car now wears 1600 Super badges; however, the Kardex and engine serial number confirm this as a Type 616/1 1600 “Normal” flat-four from new. The cockpit sports black upholstery on the deep bucket seats, charcoal square weave carpet, and a black top with accompanying side curtains.
Pleasingly honest in its presentation, with a light patina earned through age and enjoyment, this eminently desirable 356 A 1600 Speedster can be used with pleasure as-is or serve as an excellent candidate for a concours restoration offering its fortunate new owner the freedom to choose its next chapter.
