Chassis No. 2817 GT
Engine No. 2817 GT (see text)
First presented as a prototype at the 1960 24 Hours of Le Mans, the definitive Ferrari 250 GTE was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October of that year. Powered by a 3.0-liter V12 with three twin-choke Weber carburetors, it produced 240 CV and was paired with a four-speed transmission plus an overdrive fifth gear, giving the car a top speed of 230 km/h. Based on the 250 GT Coupé, the 250 GTE featured an engine positioned 20 cm farther forward, creating additional space within the passenger compartment. Its Pininfarina body incorporated the latest advances in aerodynamics, while slim windshield pillars helped create a spacious, light-filled cabin. It was the first Ferrari produced in series to accommodate four occupants.
Originally to be finished in Bianco Ermellino with a Franzi Blu Scuro interior, the car ultimately left the factory on 1st August 1961, in Blu Sera over a Beige Connolly leather interior. A letter from Carrozzeria Pininfarina, dated one month before the car was assembled, notes that the customer had visited the workshop and requested changes to the finishes. The car was also fitted with special options, including finely finished stainless steel rocker panel trim and chromed corners.
The car was sold through official dealer Gastone Crepaldi Automobili in Milan to its first owner, Signor Agostino Mereghetti, who had previously ordered new the 1959 Ferrari 250 GT, chassis number 1433 GT, which he parted with in order to acquire this 250 GTE.
In 1968, Milan dealer Dino Armando Genghini exported the car to the United States. There, it changed hands several times and received a correct-type engine from another 250 GTE, which was restamped “2817 GT” to correspond with the identity of the car.
In April 1991, the Ferrari returned to its native Italy, where it would remain for the next two decades. It was acquired by Carrozzeria Giovanni Giodanengo in Cuneo, near the French border, and subsequently underwent a restoration before being sold in 1995 to a company based in Turin, Italy. After changing hands again, the car was owned by a resident of Cuneo by 2005. The following year, it underwent a refurbishment and respray in the same city.
In 2011, the car crossed the border into France and was offered at public auction in Paris before subsequently joining its current owners in northern France. They entrusted MB Motors in Kortrijk, Belgium, with a major service in preparation for obtaining its French technical inspection. Expert reports from 2013 and 2022, which was prepared by a state-certified automotive expert and member of the FFVE, are available on file.
This Ferrari 250 GT 2+2, presented in an elegant color combination and distinguished by the ultimate touch of its chrome-finished details, is accompanied by an exceptional collection of digital copies of original documentation, including Ferrari assembly sheets, correspondence from Pininfarina, historic registration documents, and a detailed report by historian and renowned marque authority Marcel Massini.
