Conceived by Ford's Cologne motorsport department as a purpose-built circuit racer, the Capri's RS 2600 specification was created to homologate the model for Group 2 touring-car competition and give Ford a genuine European Touring Car Championship contender. Based on the contemporary 2600 GT, the RS 2600 paired a Weslake-developed 2,637-cc Cologne V6 with alloy cylinder heads and Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection, backed by a close-ratio four-speed, uprated suspension, ventilated front discs, lightweight body panels, and alloy wheels.
In full Group 2 trim, the package could be taken much further, including boring out the V6 to displace 3.0 liters along with dry-sump lubrication, extensive fiberglass bodywork, and a ZF five-speed gearbox, with outputs commonly cited north of 320 PS. The result was immediate success on European circuits, delivering back-to-back ETCC Group 2 titles in 1971 and 1972 and solidifying the Capri's reputation as one of the era's most effective touring cars.
The Capri offered here started life as a German-built, left-hand-drive 2600 GT coupe from Ford's Saarlouis plant. Originally delivered in road-going GT specification, it was later fully prepared and restored to FIA Group 2 competition specification for British historic racer Grahame Bryant, transformed by the renowned race mechanics at Ric Wood Motorsport. Subsequent preparation was rendered by Jordan Racing Team with no expense spared, resulting in a properly sorted, detail-focused build finished in a crisp blue-and-yellow livery. In February 2019, the car was issued a FIA HTC by Motorsport UK, valid through December 2029.
Across Europe at the front of competitive historic fields, the Capri has been campaigned by Grahame Bryant, Oliver Bryant, Simon Evans, James Littlejohn, and Broad Arrow's very own Joe Twyman. It has become a familiar and successful entry across the Peter Auto paddock, racing at competitive meetings including Imola, Spa, Mugello, Estoril, Dix Mille Tours, and Le Mans Classic.
A file of vivid racing photography captures the Capri doing exactly what it was built for, pitched dramatically onto two wheels through fast corners, charging through nighttime stints with lights ablaze, and battling wheel-to-wheel with iconic endurance machinery. For its next caretaker, this highly usable historic racing car offers a genuine passport to legendary events like Le Mans Classic and the Peter Auto Heritage Touring Cup, where one could experience firsthand the thrilling battles against Lolas, Matras, and Ferraris as captured in the recent racing photography.
