Introduced in 1959, the Austin Healey 3000—commonly nicknamed the “Big Healey” for its 2,912-cc six-cylinder engine originally producing 124 horsepower—was a commercial success for the British marque. Produced either as a 2+2 roadster (BT7) or a strict two-seater (BN7), it was naturally the latter that was most often used in competition. Many were indeed prepared for rallying or racing, following the example set by factory cars such as the famous “DD 300,” which competed at Sebring and Le Mans in 1960.

Delivered new in left-hand drive in February 1962 in the state of New York, the Austin Healey 3000 MKII BN7 presented here was imported from the United States in 1988 by John Chatham, often referred to as “Mr. Big Healey.” It was converted to right-hand drive and modified to FIA specifications to compete in the UK vs US Healey Challenge in 1990, driven by Mike Windsor. Since then, this example has raced continuously in major historic events across Europe, as documented by the numerous race reports and timing sheets included in its extensive file. The current French owner acquired the car in 2024 and, the following year, competed in the Le Mans Classic in Plate 3 alongside the legendary “DD300.”

The car was first fully restored in the 1990s by the British specialist Rawles Motorsport. In 2020, the then-owner, Richard Hudson, carried out a mechanical restoration to FIA standards with Woolmer Classic Engineering. The aluminum body and paint remain in generally good presentation. Equipped with a FIA-homologated Denis Welch aluminum cylinder head and its three Weber 45 DCOE carburetors, the engine now produces a claimed 270 hp, making this Healey an ideal contender for the Peter Auto Sixties' Endurance Series, the 6 Hours of Spa, or the GTSCC.

Accompanied by its FIA PTH, valid until 31 December 2025, this example has competed for only two hours (Le Mans Classic 2025) since its last overhaul. Driven by a specialist on public roads in early January, the engine proved well-tuned, delivering its full power, and is fully ready to shine on track once again!

Apparue sur le marché en 1959, l'Austin Healey 3000, régulièrement surnommée « Big Healey » en raison de son moteur 6 cylindres de 2912 cm3 développant à l'origine 124 chevaux, fut un succès commercial pour la firme anglaise. Produites en configuration roadster 2+2 (BT7) ou en stricte deux places (BN7), c'est logiquement cette dernière qui fut la plus couramment employée pour la compétition. Nombre d'entre elles furent en effet préparées pour être engagées en rallyes ou en compétitions, à l'instar des voitures d'usine, telle que la célèbre « DD 300 » ayant couru à Sebring et au Mans en 1960.

Livrée neuve en conduite à gauche en février 1962 dans l'état de New York, l'Austin Healey 3000 MKII BN7 que nous présentons ici fut importée des Etats-Unis en 1988 par John Chatham, souvent appelé « Mr Big Healey ». Elle fut convertie en conduite à droite et transformée aux spécifications FIA pour participer au UK vs US Healey Challenge en 1990 aux mains de Mike Windsor. Depuis, cet exemplaire n'a cessé de concourir dans les compétitions historiques majeures à travers l'Europe, en témoignent les nombreux rapports de courses et feuilles de temps présents dans son important dossier. C'est en 2024 que l'actuel propriétaire français en fait l'acquisition. L'année d'après, il participe au Mans Classic en plateau 3, aux côtés de l'illustre « DD300 ».

Restaurée intégralement une première fois dans les années 1990 par le spécialiste anglais Rawles Motorsport, c'est en 2020 que Richard Hudson, le propriétaire d'alors, entreprend la restauration mécanique de la voiture aux standards FIA par Woolmer Classic Engineering. La carrosserie en aluminium et sa peinture étant quant à elles en bon état général de présentation. Equipé d'une culasse aluminium Denis Welch homologuée FIA, de ses trois carburateurs Weber 45 DCOE, le moteur développe une puissance annoncée de 270 chevaux, qui font de cette Healey une arme idéale pour le Sixties' Endurance by Peter Auto, les 6 heures de Spa ou le GTSCC.

Accompagnée de son PTH FIA valide jusqu'au 31/12/2025, l'exemplaire que nous vous présentons n'a roulé que deux heures en compétition (Le Mans Classic 2025) depuis sa dernière révision. Testée par nos soins sur route ouverte début janvier, nous avons fait état d'une mécanique bien réglée délivrant tous ses chevaux, et ne demandant qu'à s'exprimer à nouveau en piste!
