Founded in 1959 by Hungarian-born, Canada-based husband and wife team Frank and Paula Reisner, Intermeccanica was international in spirit from the outset. After relocating to Turin and evolving into Costruzione Automobili Intermeccanica, the company evolved from producing performance components for European marques such as Fiat, Peugeot, and Renault, into its own low-volume sports car manufacturer. That ambition culminated in the Intermeccanica Italia, a sleek grand tourer introduced in 1966 that blended sophisticated European engineering and American power and torque. Originally commissioned by Jack Griffith as the Griffith 600, the project ultimately found its footing under Intermeccanica's stewardship, where it matured into the firm's defining model. The Italia was originally crafted with input from noted Formula One and IndyCar chassis designer John Crosthwaite and styled by Robert Cumberford, but its lines were later refined by renowned Bertone designer Franco Scaglione. It featured a tubular steel chassis and was offered initially with 289 cu-in (4.7-liter) Mustang V8, but later examples received Ford's 351 cu-in (5.8-liter) Cleveland V8 with a choice of a four-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission. Intermeccanica built approximately 240 Spyders during the Italia's limited production run from 1966 to 1972.

This 1969 Intermeccanica Italia Spyder is finished in Cherry Red with a black soft top over a black interior. An extensive history file shows prior ownership in New Jersey dating back to 1995, until the car was purchased by the consignor and shipped overseas in June 2012. Prior to entering the consignor's highly curated collection in Belgium, the car was entrusted to AWS Engineering in Gloucestershire, U.K., who begun a no-expense-spared restoration of the Italian-American sports car. Highlights of its extensive revitalization include a respray in Rover Group Cherry Red (Rd4) carefully color-matched from a surviving section of earlier paint uncovered during restoration, a full engine rebuild and dyno test, suspension rebuild, and fitment of Torino aluminum wheels. The two-year restoration was completed in 2014 and totaled over €120.000. Following its restoration, this example was almost never driven, although it has been thoroughly maintained by the consignor's in-house mechanic and has received additional care from local classic car specialists.

This 1969 Intermeccanica Italia Spyder is furnished with an extensive and well-documented restoration history with invoices on file and available to review. Carefully preserved within a discerning private collection for over a decade, this unique Italian-American sports convertible would be a standout feature of any respectable collection of rare and exotic classic cars.
