1948 Chrysler Town and Country Convertible Coupe
Lot 107 | The Chattanooga Auction 2024
Chassis No. 7402616
The Chrysler Town and Country, one of the most evocative post-war American luxury cars, evolved from the company's beloved wood-bodied station wagons of the early 1940s. This exquisite model transitioned into Convertible Coupe and Newport two-door hardtop versions, primarily built on eight and six-cylinder chassis respectively, showcasing impeccably crafted hardwood exteriors. Each Town and Country, a veritable piece of rolling furniture, was assembled with remarkable precision using the finest materials.
The Convertible Coupe variant quickly became an iconic status symbol, coveted by industrial magnates and Hollywood luminaries alike, and a true showpiece in Chrysler dealerships. As the marque's flagship, it remains one of the most sought-after automobiles from the early post-war era, gracing the world's most prestigious collections and museums. This particular Town and Country Convertible has undergone a comprehensive restoration in its original Regal Maroon finish. Notably, much of the wood was found to be original, with the restoration preserving the exemplary joinery. The white ash frame and genuine mahogany inner panels complement the Regal Maroon paintwork wonderfully. The exterior is paired with an optional, color-matched Highlander interior, featuring a luxurious combination of leather and wool tartan cloth upholstery, complemented by burgundy carpeting. The dashboard boasts a functional AM radio and clock, while dual heaters sit beneath.
In 2010, the Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) elected to grant "Full Classic" status to the 1946-1948 Chrysler Town and Country, recognizing it as the "pinnacle of engineering, styling, and design for the era." This meticulously restored Town and Country Convertible Coupe exemplifies the CCCA's Full Classic definition – an automotive icon of unparalleled craftsmanship and historical significance.
