Completed on 2 August 1956, this 1956 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is noted as being originally delivered by the first Kogel train carriage to Hamburg as an export model. With 30 miles noted on its odometer on 17 September 1956, the car was then shipped to the United States distributor Max Hoffman before ultimately reaching its original owner.
Acquired by the current owner in 2017, the car underwent a comprehensive restoration by East Coast Restorations in Finksburg, Maryland, and is finished in Black over red leather. Powered by its original, matching-numbers "M121" engine paired with a four-speed manual transmission, the car features a black convertible top, 13 inch steel wheels with body-color hubcaps, chrome bumpers, and a Becker Europa radio. Originally White, the vehicle was completely disassembled and refinished in Black (DB40), with the convertible top and striking red leather upholstery done by Eclectic Motor Company. The bumpers and trim were “triple dip” chromed plated by Speed & Sport Chrome Plating of Houston, Texas.
The restoration of chassis no. 3590 was a ground-up effort with all mechanical and cosmetic systems inspected, refurbished, and replaced to the highest level possible. It is a true concours example with attention to factory correct finishes. After completion, the restoration invoices totaled nearly $290,000 with over 2,000 hours of labor over four years. After every aspect was scrutinized, it won Best in Class at the St. Michael's Island Concours d'Elegance in September 2023. It is offered with restoration photos, service records, manufacturer's literature, a custom five-piece set of matching leather luggage by Palm Beach Classics, and a tool kit complete with its tire pressure gauge. Only shown once as a validation of the years of restoration efforts, this 1956 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is a prime candidate to be shown at countless prestigious events as one of the finest examples of the breed currently on offer.
