Chris Amon was a highly talented New Zealand racing driver who made his mark in Formula One between the early 1960s and mid-1970s, driving for teams such as Ferrari, Matra, Tyrrell, and March. Despite his exceptional skill and speed, he became known as one of the “greatest drivers never to win a Grand Prix,” often plagued by mechanical failures and bad luck. He did, however, achieve major successes outside Formula One, including a memorable victory at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans co-driving a Ford GT40 with Bruce McLaren, and winning the 1969 Tasman Series in a Ferrari. After retiring from racing in 1976, he returned to New Zealand, ran the family farm, and contributed to automotive projects, notably with Toyota. Amon's legacy endures through the Chris Amon Trophy, awarded in New Zealand's junior racing series, and he is remembered as a driver of remarkable talent whose career was defined as much by misfortune as by speed.

These Hinchman overalls are from Chris' 1971 season with the Equipe Matra Sports team. In 1971, Chris Amon demonstrated his exceptional talent and speed driving for the works Matra team. He started the year on a high note by winning the non‑championship Argentine Grand Prix and secured a strong podium with third place at the Spanish Grand Prix. Throughout the season, he delivered impressive performances, including fifth-place finishes in South Africa and France, and earned pole position at the Italian Grand Prix, highlighting his qualifying brilliance. While a few setbacks prevented him from converting speed into a championship win, the season clearly showcased Amon's skill, determination, and consistency, cementing his reputation as one of F1's most gifted and exciting drivers of his era.
