An exceptionally rare surviving component from the British-built LEC CRP1, as raced by David Purley
This original dashboard assembly from the LEC CRP1 Formula One car represents a rare surviving component from one of the most remarkable privateer efforts of the 1970s. Built by the British refrigeration company LEC and designed by Mike Pilbeam, the CRP1 was a bespoke Formula One chassis campaigned during the 1977 World Championship season by the courageous and much-admired David Purley.
The dashboard offered here is a genuine, period-built unit from one of the LEC CRP1 chassis, constructed to the team's own specification. It features the distinctive hand-fabricated aluminium panel with apertures for instrumentation, toggle switches, and warning lamps, precisely as fitted to the cockpit of Purley's car. The component displays clear signs of authentic race use and workshop handling, consistent with its provenance as an original Formula One part.
The CRP1 itself gained lasting fame through both its technical ambition and its driver's heroism. Purley, already renowned for his bravery in attempting to save Roger Williamson at Zandvoort in 1973, returned to the grid with the small LEC team to take on the giants of the sport. The car showed flashes of genuine competitiveness before Purley suffered a near-fatal accident at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone — surviving one of the highest recorded deceleration impacts in history.
Very few LEC CRP1 components remain in existence, making this dashboard an important and evocative artefact from a truly human chapter in Formula One history. It stands as a testament to the ingenuity and determination of a small British team competing on the world stage during the sport's most demanding era.
A unique opportunity to acquire an original, race-period component from the legendary LEC CRP1 F1 car.
